1990s

1990

Scout Clinton Perry was presented with “Meritous Conduct” medal in February. Clinton has Spina Bifida and is a credit to the group. He has a go at everything and is always smiling!  Beavers have changed from Turquoise Scarves to our group Scarlet one.  Site booked in the Brecon Area for Spring camp “Castle Court” (English translation) . Boys to do car wash at Leigh Delamare to pay for extra activities.  Hall redecorated by Mr R. Baggs during half term. Purchased our 1st Mini Bus, what a difference it made to camp activities!  It will be a big asset to all sections. Extensive fundraising, mainly screen washing at Leigh Delamere soon paid for the bus in full. 17th November is the date given for the launch of the new cub training programme. Low numbers in Cubs and Scouts giving concern.

1991

Scouts tried a new activity, Potholing in Burrington Coombe. It was enjoyed very much by everyone who attended.  Scout Hall broken into 3 broken doors and 2 windows, cupboards were searched but nothing stolen. Alan Carter our treasurer to retire at the A.G.M. in May after many years service to the group.  Pete Jennison S.L. posted to Belize. Geoff Lucas will become S.L. again with Henry still A.S.L with 2 young leaders. We have purchased some canoes. Annual camp held at Castle Court again.  It was elected and minuted that the group would not admit Girls into Calne Group. There were several reasons this decision was made.  In November the Mini Bus was stolen from the car park and found in London. Geoff and Henry went up to bring it back. The steering had been damaged so the A.A. came to the rescue and brought it back for us!

1992

Group was 80 years old in February. Total membership in Group is 67. Clinton Perry selected to go to Kenya as part of `Kenyan Link’  Troop won District Camping Comp, and will represent us at County level later in the year, we will be organising District Camp next year.  Flower Bed still being looked after. Over 50 boys on the Beaver List. New leaders needed in all sections.  A county camp held in Holland in the summer was very successful and the site has been booked again for 1995 when the World Jamboree will be held there.  In Sept we catered for a large Archery Event at Compton Bassett. It was a two day event and was hard work but great fun. Mike Webb who helped us on that weekend came along to Scouts the following week, and is now doing his Leader training.

Sub Committee formed to raise funds for a new Mini-bus.  Joint Guide and Scout event held at Recreation Ground in June went well despite the wet weather.  Maureen Fletcher and David Gillett Cub Scout Leaders attended Camping Skills Training Course at Potterne. Leader shortage still a problem in all sections. Fund Raising still co-ordinated by Leaders despite appeals for more help in organisation. Christmas Postal Service increasing every year.  Group attending District and County events regularly.

1996

Another busy year with Scouting activities and Fund raising. We seem to be making a name for ourselves in catering for Archery competitions etc. we’ve also been car parking at Hullavington Car Boot sales. The Scout troop spent their annual camp at Gilwell Park.  Just in time for their annual weekend visit to London in November we changed our mini-bus.

1997

We are 85 years old this year and celebrated with an open weekend when we put all sorts of items and photographs on display. Visitors came from far and wide , past and present members. One past member Andy Spyer came and has since become a A.S.L.  The County held a 90th anniversary of Scouting event at Swindon Football Ground followed by a picnic.  It was great fun. The Chief Scout attended.  Annual Camp this year was at the Welsh Jamboree at Denbigh, North Wales. In October we said farewell to Geoff Lucas who having reached the age of 65 has to retire from being a Warrented Leader. He had been with the group 19 years. Membership numbers are 102 this year. Brian and Liz Stevens and their daughter Ann began their Leader Training.

1998

Another good year for all sections. Cubs and Beavers busy attending District and County events.  The Troops Annual camp was in Germany at R.A.F. Bruggen, at the invitation of Ian White who was an Assistant Leader with us until he was posted to Germany last year. A super time was had by all who attended.  The hall is looking very smart after Leaders and Helpers fitted a new Kitchen and also Decorated throughout the interior. New floor tiles were also laid in the Kitchen, Hallway and Toilets.

1999

All sections working well. Lots of activities keeping us busy. The Beavers have been to Avebury and Middle Wallop. Cubs to the regions day out at Gilwell and to District camp at Rock near Chippenham. The Scouts have been attending canoeing sessions at Corsham Swimming Pool. Their annual camp was at Torquay, a very wet and windy week. Central tent was damaged when it collapsed but we managed to use half for rest of the week. The boys showed real team work in getting things straight again.  G.S.L. Audrey Lucas presented with the 1 5 year Long Service Award at the District A.G.M.  We opened up the Hall for the Kosovo Appeal and had a marvelous response not only from Calne townsfolk but other places as well. It was far more than we had anticipated.
